As the holiday season approaches, requests for food increase. More people are living in poverty than ever before- in fact, one of seven Americans classifies below the federal poverty line. In this struggling economy, it’s recognized that many families have been put in tough positions: having to choose between eating and paying rent. As a result, there has been a significant increase of people going homeless or hungry. So, how can we help?
Everyone can participate in the community effort to end hunger and malnutrition. Hosting or attending a food drive, making donations, and volunteering, are all supportive acts to fight hunger. Let’s start locally with Philabundance, the largest hunger relief organization in the Delaware Valley. Philabundace provides food to approximately 65,000 people per week, distributing to a network of 500 agencies. These include shelters, food cupboards, social service agencies, and emergency kitchens.
On Saturday, November 13th I will be hosting a canned food drive. The event will be in conjunction with a concert, including 12 acts of local talent from 12-6pm- some including Andrea Nardello, Dante Bucci, Trevor Gordon Hall, Adam Monaco, Blair Bodine, Bill McConney, Victoria Spaeth, Aly Cat, Mike Malloy, Anam Owili-Eger, Alexandra Day, and Christie Lenée. For all of this music, the admission is only one canned food item (or as much as the community can contribute)!
Concert/food drive will take place on Saturday, November 13th at Naked Chocolate Café, on 18th St just north of Chestnut in Center City, Philadelphia. All proceeds will be distributed directly to Philabundance in support of feeding the hungry on Thanksgiving. High priority items include canned/shelf-stable tuna, macaroni and cheese, canned pasta, canned beef stew, canned chili, peanut butter, jelly, canned green beans, canned corn, canned fruit, breakfast cereal, and hot cereal.
